Edgar Allan Poe

Think about what you learned in class today about Edgar Allan Poe's life.  Read this poem and explain what you think it's about.  What makes you think so?

Alone
Edgar Allan Poe

From childhood's hour I have not been
As others were - I have not seen
As others saw - I could not bring
My passions from a common spring -
From the same source I have not taken
My sorrow - I could not awaken
My heart to joy at the same tone -
And all I ever lov'd - I lov'd alone -
Then - in my childhood - in the dawn
Of a most stormy life - was drawn
From every depth of good and ill
The mystery which binds me still -
From the torrent, or the fountain -
From the red cliff of the mountain -
From the sun that 'round me roll'd
In its autumn tint of gold -
From the lightning in the sky
As it pass'd me flying by -
From the thunder, and the storm -
And the cloud that took the form
(When the rest of Heaven was blue)
Of a demon in my view -

  2. I think it's about him being alone and trying to find happiness but can't. I think that because it says my sorrow I cannot awaken and it talks about him being alone

  8. I think it's about a kid that grew up different than everyone else and people thought he was weird. Bad things always happened to him because at the end it is saying he saw a cloud that looked like a demon. I think this because it is saying as others did I couldn't and other things like that.

  9. I think it is about him thinking about his mom's death and that his foster family did not love him. He is probably alone somewhere just depressed thinking about depressing things during a storm that reminds him of his parents. I think this because he had a very depressing life and it says " When the rest of heaven was blue." I think he is talking about his mother who died and he has a lot of sad lines.

  10. I think he is describing how he had a different childhood and was not like the other kids. He also describes how he had a very depressing life. He said he lov'd alone and that sounds like he thought he wasn't loved and that he didn't want to love.I don't know why he described the weather, though. He thinks the devil is inside him because his life was filled with so much depression.

  11. I think that Edgar Allen Poe is a very discriptive writer. I think he is discribing the sadness someone feels. The person feels sad about everything in life that he/she sees or imagines. I think that person dies and they are experiencing the Heavens as blue (sad). I think this because of Poe's wording, "When the rest of Heaven was blue." He also said, "My sorrow-I could not bring."

  12. I think that it's about a guy (edger allen poe) who is very lonley. He is telling people how lonley he was in his childhood and how lonley he still is.

  13. He is a misfit,
He likes what other do not,
His darkness can not be lit,
and for the poem death is the plot

A dreary life he has led,
And this must be about his sorrows,
Hoping to get away from death's bed,
He can not wait till tomorrow

    And his love died away,
His life to him is a shame,
    His happiness is so gray,
And the steps he thinks don't even love his name

This poem is about how his love is gone and people don't understand him. His happiness is gone and the end makes me think of death. A demon in my view reminds me of death. So does the word Heaven sometimes. Do the words (When the rest of Heaven was blue) mean that Heaven was sad? Well, that's what I thought. And yes, It was creepy. I love that poem!

  14. I think the poem is about him not knowing what other people think of him or death.

  15. i think he is talking about how his adopted family will never love him truly in the whole entire world because he was talking about a lot of different places and that he will only love alone which i wasn't sure who he loved so i looked it up and he married his 13 year old cousin Virginia L.And i think he was wondering if he will go to heaven or if he would go to the devil.CREEPY!!!

  17. Edgar Allen Poe is a good writer. Also HE FREAKS ME OUT!!!! I think the poem is about a lonely child who goes through childhood experiences alone. He goes through tough times alone. I think this because of the title and because of the line "I lov'd alone." I like how he uses repetition in some of his poems. He is mysterious.

  18. I think this poem is about a child who lost all the people he loved and he sits by a cliff by the sea waiting for the next chapter of his childhood to unfold as he sits there thinking about the people he loved and he doesn't want people to get close to him like Maniac Magee. As the sun is setting on the golden rim of the sky he sits there he sees a raven. And he looks into the pitch black souless eyes of the demon bird
that a rave is. This poem made me think this because it sounded of loss, death, and sadness. I think this because he talks about all the things he loves he loves by himself.

  19. No ofense but I really think this man is creepy. When I read his poem, it made me think of one season to the next and everyone is dying. There is a little kid [the one in the poem] that I think is writing about his family members dying. I think this because it sAYes in the poem "When the heaven was blue of demon in my veiw" and I also think it is about seasons because it says sping and autumn. The End

  20. I think it is about he remembers the raven and he also remembers his childhood. I think he is like Emily D. But he is still strange. So I wrote a poem:

    I am very sad
    But not mad
    You are strange
I do not want to be in your range

  21. I think it's about his childhood and the rest of his life. I think his life was very depressing. I think this because it said "Fron childhood hours I have not been As others were- I have not seen As others saw _ i could not bring.

  22. I think this poem is about how he feels alone like in a dark, terifing abyes no where to go nowhere to run and hide. I think it is also about how he does not see the world like other people but he feels like it is traped inside him no where to exscape.

  23. I think it is about how miserable someones life was and how sad it is. I like it because he expressed how he felt and it is a good way to let poeple that are sad that their are not the only ones in the world that sad. I think it is about that because he always writes sad poems and how he talks about his childhood. I think everyone feels miserable in their life!

  25. sadness because as a kid he didn't have parents still alive. He lived with people he didn't think loved him. I got that mostly from the part that says i saw from different eyes then other kids. That makes sense because he didn't have any birth parents still alive so his life went differently

  26. I think it's about him and his childhood being dark and scary. I think he is a good poet but he is kind of creepy.

  28. I think it is about him when he was a kid and how he was always alone when others were having a good time.

  29. I think that he wrote about his sad life because he had a rough life and eveybody teased him. He did not see the world as everybody else did.

  30. This poem is full of sorrow,
We will check this answer tomorrow,
I think the writer feels alone,
I can tell this by his tone.

Could this be about his parents who are dead,
This is the thought I have in my head.
This poem is about his dead parents because it says since his childhood hour. It also said he loved alone.

  31. I think this poem is about when Edgard's parents died he was always alone and never wanted to play because he was afraid he would get teased about his parents. It sounds like all he did was watch from a window and always felt like he was in a nightmare that wouldn't end and it was storming and all he could do is sit there and stareat the demon.

  32. I think that the poem is about Edgar Allan Poe never having a happy child hood. It is about him feeling sad, alone, and never feeling loved or usefull. I think that poem is about being deppresed because he uses the words sorrow, alone, stormy, mystery, and demon.

  33. I think this is about a child who was very evil, and had only one person he loved and cared for before he died of illness. I read it and it said words like "childhood" and "ill" and "demon".

  34. I think this poem is about his childhood and how he had no parents and then how the Allans foster him and then how he went to college and started a "darker" life but he doesn't want to talk about it. I think it is about these things because it says from childhood's hour I have not been, and all I ever lov'd - I'd lov'd alone, and of a demon in my view. I think the last phrase ties his whole life together.

  35. I think that Edgar Allan Poe's poem is about his childhood. When he wrote this about himself he wrote about how he could of had a lovely childhood but his was miserble. The way he compares things makes the poem sound more interesting and creepy. Poe is a very creepy poet and I am excited to learn more about him.

  36. I think he is talking about what he sees always looks happy and that he will never be happy. Like his life is trying to annoy him. Trying to make him angry. That he will never be happy ever again because happiness to him is impossible.

  37. I think it is talking about how his life is so bad and how ever one in his family died. I think that because it talks about deamens an horror.

  38. I think it ia about him as a child as a lonely person. When he said the demon is in view......he feels that now that he has no one, he may feel like his life is DOOMED!!!!

  39. I think it's about him having a miserable life and everyone doing stuff and playing around without him.

  40. I think it is about him in his childhood and when he went to college he thought he didn't fit in because they made fun of his poems and he lived a sad dark life. I think it is this stuff because it says childhood and demon.

  41. I think that this poem is about his childhood and him being lonely. Mainely just his life and how his mom died when he was young and his dad leaving them and how it says in the poem he shared his poem with his friends and they just made fun of him, and then he went and threw it in the fire. So i kinda think its more about being made fun of and being lonely.

  42. I think it means how he grows up with no parents and no one to look up to. I think this because his childhood wasn't very pleasent.

  43. I think the poem is about his childhood because it said," From childhood's hour I have not been." I like this man, even tough he is soooooooooo creepy and wierd. I wish this guy would of wrote more happy poems. Here is a poem I made and I wish he would of done.

    When I see the moon
    I hear a great tune
    From seeds to weeds
    I do great deeds
    THE END

  44. I think this poem is about how he grew up litarally "alone" with his feelings, his opinions, and thoughts.I think this because in the poem he didn't fit in because he liked other things,so he is alone with his opinions. He is alone with his feelings because in the poem it said "all I ever lov'd-I lov'd alone". He is alone with his thoughts because in the poem I feel like he lived his life closed up like a clam, afraid to to tell others because he is worried about what they will think.
